In an era characterised by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, the focus shifts from how we manage data to why we do it — and for whom. Inspired by Daniel Wahl’s challenge — “Which cultural, social and technological innovations will help us bring human activity and the planet’s life-support systems into a mutually supporting regenerative relationship rather than an erosive one?” (Wahl 2016)—This session examines how enterprise data architecture can support organisational adaptability and sustainability.
Rob Malcolm will describe the shift from the Old Paradigm of control, compliance, and silos to a New Paradigm centred on shared purpose, learning, and regeneration. He will present the Adaptive Capacity Virtuous Cycle, highlighting how social capital (trust, relationships) and human capital (knowledge, skills, mindsets) mutually reinforce each other.
Using Nonaka’s SECI model as a bridge, Rob will illustrate how practical disciplines like Business Capability Modelling (BCM) and Common Data Modelling (CDM) enable this cycle. They help create shared understanding, a common language, and a foundation for an integrated Knowledge Base. These artefacts not only ensure data integrity but also promote the organisational intelligence necessary to adapt, survive, and thrive in a complex world.
